Recessed Lighting Installation

Recessed Lighting Installation in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids, IA

Recessed lighting gives you even, modern light without fixtures hanging down from the ceiling or taking attention away from the rest of the room. Schaal Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Electric installs recessed lighting in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and surrounding Iowa communities.

Our licensed electricians handle the project from planning where the lights belong to testing each fixture from the switch. If the room needs new wiring, switches, or circuit work, we can complete those electrical replacement services as part of the installation.

What's Included in a Recessed Lighting Install

Before cutting into the ceiling, we plan the layout, mark the proposed light locations, and check the existing electrical setup. We also look for ceiling joists, insulation, ductwork, plumbing, and existing wiring that could affect where the fixtures can go.

From there, we make the required ceiling openings, install the fixtures or housings, run the wiring, and add the switch or dimmer. Once power is restored, we test every fixture and control to make sure the lighting works properly.

We keep ceiling openings limited to the access needed for the electrical work. If additional drywall access is necessary, we explain that beforehand and clarify whether the required drywall repair and finishing are included in the project.

New Construction vs. Retrofit Recess Lighting

If the ceiling framing is open during a remodel, addition, or new construction project, we can install new-construction housings and wiring before the drywall goes up. The open framing provides direct access for positioning the electrical box and running the circuit wiring.

A finished ceiling requires a different approach. Remodel housings and canless LED downlights can be installed through openings cut into the existing drywall. Attic access above the room may provide another way to reach the wiring.

Recessed lighting can still be installed without attic access, but the wiring route needs to be planned carefully before any openings are made. Ceiling joists, ductwork, insulation, and other hidden obstacles may affect the final layout or the amount of access required.

How Many Lights Do I Need in Each Room?

There is no single number or spacing measurement that works for every room. The right layout depends on the room’s dimensions, ceiling height, fixture output, beam spread, wall colors, and how the space is used.

A common starting point is to space recessed lights approximately half the ceiling height apart. For example, lights in a room with an 8-foot ceiling may begin around 4 feet apart. That is only a planning guideline. The fixture’s lumen output and beam angle may call for wider or closer spacing.

In a kitchen, the layout should place usable light over counters, sinks, and other work areas instead of behind the person using them. If you already have pendants over an island, the recessed lights should work with those fixtures rather than compete with them.

In a living room or bedroom, the goal is even coverage without filling the ceiling with lights you do not need. Over-lighting a small room can create glare and make the ceiling feel crowded. We mark the proposed positions before cutting so you can see how the lights will sit in the room.

Choosing the Right Light Fixtures for Your Cedar Rapids or Des Moines Home

LED downlights are available as traditional fixtures with housings, retrofit inserts for existing cans, and thin canless fixtures with separate junction boxes. The right option depends on the ceiling, available space, insulation, and whether recessed housings are already installed.

Lumens tell you how much light the fixture produces. Color temperature describes whether that light looks warm, neutral, or cool. Warmer light is often used in living rooms and bedrooms, while kitchens and work areas may benefit from a brighter or more neutral appearance. Using the same color temperature throughout an open space keeps the lighting from looking mismatched.

If insulation will touch or cover the fixture, the light or housing must be rated for insulation contact. Airtight fixtures can also help limit air movement through openings in the ceiling.

Fixture ratings matter in moisture-prone areas. Lights installed above a shower or where they may come into direct contact with water need the appropriate wet-location rating. Other bathroom locations and many covered porches may require damp-location fixtures. We choose the rating based on the fixture’s exact location and exposure.

Dimmers and Control Lighting Upgrades

A dimmer lets you adjust recessed lighting for different activities and times of day. The LED fixtures and dimmer must be compatible with each other to work properly.

A mismatched dimmer is one reason LED lights flicker, buzz, shut off unexpectedly, or fail to dim smoothly. The number of fixtures and their combined electrical load also affect which control should be installed.

If you already have recessed lights with a bad switch, loose connection, damaged wiring, or another electrical problem, we address those electrical repairs before installing new controls.

Do You Need an Electrician for Recessed Lighting?

Yes, a new recessed lighting installation should be handled by a licensed electrician when it involves new wiring, circuit changes, junction boxes, switch legs, or connections inside the ceiling.

The electrician needs to determine whether the existing circuit has enough capacity for the additional fixtures and whether a new circuit is necessary. The work must also account for fixture clearances, insulation, grounding, junction-box access, and any code or permit requirements that apply to the project.

Replacing an LED insert inside an existing recessed housing may be more straightforward, but adding lights in new locations involves more than changing a fixture.

Recessed Lighting Installation Cost in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids

Difficult wiring routes, finished ceilings without attic access, tall or sloped ceilings, new circuits, specialty fixtures, and drywall work all impact the final cost of recessed lighting installs.

Additionally, adding two lights where wiring is easy to reach is a different project from installing several fixtures across a finished ceiling with no access above it. The final quote depends on:

  • The number of lights
  • Fixture and trim type
  • Ceiling height and material
  • Attic or ceiling access
  • Existing circuit capacity
  • New wiring or circuit requirements
  • Switches, dimmers, or smart controls
  • Required drywall access and finishing

For a larger lighting project involving several rooms or new circuit work, we have financing options available.

How Long Does Recessed Lighting Installation Take?

A standard single-room installation of approximately four to six lights can often be completed in half a day to one full day. Larger projects involving several rooms, new circuits, difficult ceiling access, or additional repairs may take one to several days.

Once we inspect the room and electrical setup, we explain what the project involves and provide a more specific timeline.
